Lazybrook
an oasis of trees among development

Positioned in
the northwest corner of the 610 Loop, the Lazybrook neighborhood is
conveniently located in close proximity to major thoroughfares, retail
centers, and several business parks. It is bounded by the North Loop on
the west, by West T.C. Jester on the east and West 18th street to the
south. The heavily wooded land was owned by oil companies prior to
development. A 1939 map shows the Eureka Oil Field was located on the
eastern edge of the neighborhood where West T.C. Jester is today. The
oil companies eventually sold their tracts of land when oil drilling did
not prove profitable. In the 1950's and 60's the land was developed by
independent builders who built ranch style homes on large lots, many
which featured hardwood floors and vintage 1950's touches like colored
bathroom tiles.
Today the Lazybrook neighborhood provides a wooded and
well-maintained environment for its residents. The tree-lined streets
are filled with one and two story homes from traditional ranch style to
tudor to modern style. This deed restricted neighborhood is home to over
600 residents who enjoy the amenities of an active civic association and
a small town atmosphere for neighborliness. Many residents are long time
home owners who have taken pride in the upkeep of their home and lawn
which adds to the overall pleasantness of their surroundings. White Oak
Bayou meanders alongside the neighborhood providing park areas and bike
trails along the banks. However, business development has continued
along the 610 Loop area and the neighborhood finds itself in the shadows
of high rise office buildings. Despite this activity the Lazybrook
neighborhood remains an oasis of trees and green space inside the loop.
The residents have also made special efforts to add trees to the area by
planting them on esplanades and beautifying nearby streets.
