Among the neighborhoods inside the northwest quadrant of the 610
Loop, Timbergrove Manor most resembles a suburban community. The large,
rambling size of the neighborhood along with its ranch style brick homes
and spacious yards have long set it apart inside the loop. Sections of
Timbergrove Manor begin at Durham St. near West Heights and extend as
far west as the West Loop. Sections also stretch from the northern-most
boundary on West 18th St. to the southern boundary just below West 11th
St.
The land where Timbergrove Manor sits today was previously settled by
German farmers in the 1870's and was known as the Vollmer community.
Other German farming communities were settled as far west as Spring
Branch. In the 1930s the Eureka oil fields were located just to the
north of the Vollmer land in what is now Lazybrook. A rail line to the
south of the Vollmer land traveled east and west between Houston and
Katy through an area called Eureka and today is known as the Eureka
corridor. Some of the early farmers were buried in a small historic
cemetery which still exists today in the Timbergrove neighborhood. The
cemetery bears names which are now familiar street names, such as
Vollmer, Neimann, Helberg, Sauer, Hillendahl and Clay.
The homes in Timbergrove Manor were built in the fifties and sixties
and retain many of the features of the era, like hardwood floors and
thin brick exteriors. The older portion of the subdivision lies east of
T.C. Jester along White Oak Bayou, and is composed mainly of traditional
frame houses, while those to the west of T.C. Jester are larger brick
homes. Each of these portions has separate civic associations and are
deed restricted.
A great many of the homeowners in Timbergrove are original owners who
bought their homes in Timbergrove to accommodate growing families. They
found the neighborhood convenient to schools, parks, and shopping
centers. Currently, there are two parks located in the neighborhood:
Jaycee Park with tennis courts, and the 11th Street Park with a nature
trail. Memorial Park is less than a 10 minute drive away, as is the
Galleria via the West Loop freeway. Timbergrove has its own Little
League field, jogging trails, and the White Oak Bayou Bike Trail that
runs alongside the neighborhood.
Timbergrove Manor residents have the reputation for maintaining their
homes and keeping their neighborhood well groomed. They have also been
active in neighborhood protection issues and have organized recently to
save 21 acres for a park, and to keep a street closed to prevent more
traffic through the neighborhood. Today Timbergrove is surrounded by new
development and is currently experiencing some rebuilding and updating
of homes.
Perhaps the best thing about the neighborhood is location.
Timbergrove Manor is perfectly situated for freeway access, is minutes
away from the center of activities at downtown sports facilities and
businesses, and a ride around the 610 Loop to Reliant Park. The
neighborhood hasn't been known to most Houstonians, but is being
recognized as one of the premier neighborhoods in Houston for being
close to everything.
